The September 11 Commission urged action a very long time ago on protecting us from shipments coming by boat (and air) to America. Congress, believe it or not, is nearing passage FINALLY of a bill that will do something about this. But if the bill passes and if they do something in the end, it won't be until 2014! That's seven years from now. I hope the terrorists will be patient with us as we get our act together. It is hard to believe, how ineffective Congress is -- usually that doesn't matter much, but in the case of terror threats, it is very scary. We are vulnerable in lots of ways. One of the most vulnerable areas is our ports where cargo arrives daily and is barely looked at (even sampled for checks only sometimes). This has been recognized as a serious weakness for a very long time. But we are not doing very much, and Congress is certainly not acting with the urgency required. To give us 7 years to address this vulnerability is dreadful. As bad is the cargo flying along with us in passenger planes. This is serious, and the bill plans to do something in 3 years. I am glad our leaders are so laid back. We are playing with fire here.
